               Introducing 'Quick Philately'

During 2011 year we introduced the idea of 'quick philately' where a single sheet, or two, perhaps three at the most, were put together around a very few stamps and exhibited at one of our meetings.  Each sheet, or group of sheets, tells a little story, or has about it some mystery to be shown to other members.  Very often 'quick philately' has nothing to do with a collector's main collection but provides a few hours of pleasant research.

St Martin dividing his cloak

This sheet above has on it only 8 stamps. They were designed by  two different Belgian artists and  are based on the painting of St Martin Dividing his Cloak, by Van Dyck.  It seems that there was more than one version of this painting, and although they are similar they are not quite the same.

A little research suggested that these stamps were based on the version in the chapel at Zaventem.  But if they were, then  why has the figure on the left been omitted - we have a a little mystery   Click here to look at the larger version and see what you think.

Out of India

Here is another one, called 'Out of India,' which features just three stamps from our stamp packet, and cost about £1.00.

These are Victorian 4Anna stamps from India,  - regularly available and inexpensive - but these were on the backs of shipping notices, each nicely cancelled by an embossing machine, and each carrying a fragment of the shippers' letterhead on the back.  The backs of each were photocopied and mounted alongside the stamp.

We ran a Christmas competition and had twelve entries.  It was very successful and included great entries from three complete novices.  The rules were simple - use a very few stamps, do some research and tell a story, mix used and mint if you need to.  Add in stamps on piece (on envelopes or letters) , on postcards - whatever you think enhances that 'story'.  Here are two examples.  Most of our members have a go at 'quick philately' and we hope that you will too.
